What I think Heaven is like

Author's note: This is an informal response to the first hundred pages of The Five People you Meet in Heaven. In the beginning, when the book explained the main character's first experience in Heaven, the blue man said that Heaven is whatever you want it to be. I decided to write what I think Heaven is like. Also, I got some inspiration looking at the beginning of Kati's response.

It's the universal question. What happens after death? Many different religions and cultures have their own ideas. I believe in heaven. My trust is in that God has set up a place for us to be reunited and be at peace. But no one on Earth will ever know what it's like. The only way to get there is death. Though there are several people that claim to have "seen the light", the true secret is only uncovered through the doorway of the end of this life. A bible camp counselor once explained it to me like this. "Humans trying to picture heaven is like a stick person trying to picture a 3-D world. It is out of our grasp to even attempt to imagine."  To this day, that has been one of the most thought provoking ideas I'd ever heard. At church, when I hear people talking about the streets paved of gold, and infinite amount of space, and a perfect soul, I just think "It's really a million times better than that." We can only guess what the afterlife has in store for us- but I know it's worth waiting for. It's the reason we should be at peace with the idea of death- it's a part of us and only takes us to an eternity of happiness.

Intertwined

Author's note: This is just a short little free verse poem on how everyone in the word's lives are somehow connected- even in the slightest way. I am focusing on word choice. I got the idea when reading about the 3rd person he meets in Heaven, Ruby, because he didn't even meet her during his lifetime but still had a huge effect on him.I know it's a really bad poem because I had to do it last minute and then I thought of a good idea, but couldn't seem to complete it. It's just really bad and choppy and I don't like it at all.

I hear a story
about a death
in the news
and I stop and wonder
could that happen to me?

Watching a movie
of an inspirational tale
Why can't I do that?
I should be braver

A girl makes a friend
that friend is my friend, too
but not any more,
for we have drifted apart.

A job listing in Milwaukee
An eager young worker
uprooting his entire family to Pewaukee.

A baby on a doorstep
soon up for adoption
comes to the USA
now one of my best friends.

Our lives are all connected
for the good or the bad
something happens to some one
it affects a friend
and then their friend
then us
intricately weaving our lives together

Movie

After finishing the book recently, our lit. group watched the movie based on the book. There wasn't much to say about it, other than it was basically the same. I have to say that this is definitely not the best book I've read or movie I've seen. It was good, there was just nothing special about it. This post is mostly a review.

The movie, "The Five People you Meet in Heaven", is a heartwarming tale about one man's life: how it affected others, and others affected his. This is a very unique idea for a movie and is well portrayed, although is not the most exciting. It is half made up of flashbacks, half present day, making it something unique of a movie, though I believe the movie was drawn out a little too long, where as the book was a good pace and length. I would recommend this movie if you are looking for a feel-good story.

  1. I really like how you added the comment from your bible camp leader. I think that that quote really gives a bigger explanation of how heaven is like. Good Job.

  3. Streets Paved with gold? If the streets really are paved with gold, wouldn't people have taken some and sold it already? But its also true, You can only guess what awaits you in the after life.

  4. This is a great piece. Although it wasn't a regular book response, but it was interesting.

  5. I liked this post... your author's note was very helpful, and very accurate. I liked the way you didn't really express what will be so great about heaven, yet you made us think. I believe that everyone's heaven will be different, and you sort of didn't direct to say it is one way or the other. Nice job!

  6. On Intertwined: One of the things I love about your writing is your fearless approach to complex issues and topics. This is a daunting one to be sure. It is difficult to get the idea across in a short poem that somehow we are all connected, and all of our actions affect each other in one way or another.

  7. What I think Heaven is like.... Even though I'm not responding to the same piece as Mr. Johnson is, I agree with him. You aren't afraid to write about what you actually care about. I liked how you quoted the camp counselor you had, as a way to express what other people think as well. I know I'm supposed to criticize you at this point in the comment, but I don't know what to say for that part. Anyway, as another part you did well, you had great vocabulary.
